
A police constable attached to the Aduruppu Street Police Station in Colombo has been arrested by a team of officers from the Colombo District Criminal Investigation Bureau on charges of engaging in large-scale drug trafficking. The arrest was made on the midnight of the 4th, and it is noteworthy that this officer had been conducting his drug trafficking operations from a rented house located directly opposite the said police station.
It has also been revealed that he was involved in raids and case operations of the anti-corruption unit at the Aduruppu Street Police.During the raid, 40 grams and 950 milligrams of 'Ice' drug, 1 gram and 950 milligrams of heroin, 225 grams of hashish, 300 narcotic pills, and over a hundred illegally imported foreign cigarettes were taken into police custody from the suspect constable. This raid was launched based on confidential information received by officers of the Western Province Intelligence Division.
Investigations have revealed that the suspect secretly kept a portion of the drugs seized during police raids and later sold them to other drug traffickers and addicts. Additionally, police have received information that he was also involved in buying drugs from certain traffickers in the Colombo area and reselling them. Police suspect whether there are other individuals behind this drug network.
The arrested suspect officer is a 28-year-old unmarried man residing in the Polonnaruwa area. It is reported that he joined the police service in 2020. The suspect is to be produced before the court to obtain a detention order.
This operation was launched under the full supervision of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Sanjeewa Medawatta, in charge of the Western Province, and on the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police Nishantha de Zoysa, in charge of the Colombo District. Further extensive investigations regarding the said constable are being carried out under the direction of Senior Superintendent of Police Indika Lokuhetti, Director of the Colombo District Criminal Investigation Bureau.
