Amit Weerasinghe, who claims to be the leader of the 'Abhinawa Niwahal Peramuna' (New Free Front), has been arrested by the Theldeniya Police in connection with an incident of defrauding approximately 100 million rupees under the guise of a cabana construction project. This large-scale financial fraud was uncovered during police investigations, based on complaints made by those who provided money for the said project.
Approximately eighteen individuals who invested money in this fraudulent cabana project have already lodged their complaints with the police. The suspect, who was arrested in connection with the incident and remanded, when produced before the court the day before yesterday (02), stated through his lawyers that he agrees to return the relevant money to the complainants within a period of three months.
The court has taken steps to impose a travel ban on the suspect Amit Weerasinghe, and he has also been ordered to appear before the Special Crimes Investigation Unit of the Theldeniya Police every Sunday between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. This case is scheduled to be called again on August 03rd.
Under the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police for the Central Province, Mr. Sudath Masinghe, a police team including the Officer-in-Charge of Theldeniya Police Station, Chief Police Inspector M.D. Chandrapala, is conducting further investigations into this financial fraud.
