He states that a statement made recently by the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Mr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, at the Parliament's Committee on Public Finance, has been misinterpreted and published by the 'Aruna' Sinhala newspaper, which belongs to the Derana Media Network. Mr. Weerasinghe revealed this yesterday (18) while participating in a special press conference held at the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The Central Bank Governor pointed out that the newspaper in question had used the headline 'The future is very uncertain,' and that the news story is currently circulating widely on social media. He further explained that during the relevant Committee on Public Finance meeting, its chairman, Mr. Rauff Hakeem, commented on the measures taken by countries including India due to rising global oil prices and the uncertainty in the world economy. Responding to Mr. Hakeem's suggestion that Sri Lanka should also take similar steps, Mr. Weerasinghe stated that he had expressed that no one can definitively predict the future of global factors such as the world economy, war, and oil prices, and therefore, as a government and a central bank, risks should be minimized with prior preparation.
Accordingly, he believes that the relevant headline was created by attributing a situation affecting the entire world solely to Sri Lanka, due to an error that occurred during the translation of his English statement into Sinhala. The Central Bank has already sent a letter to the newspaper in question, requesting them to correct this misleading news story. The Central Bank Governor emphasized that he expects them, as a responsible media outlet, to publish the correction with the same prominence as the original headline, and that if they fail to do so and publish it in small print on another page, it would appear to be a deliberate attempt to mislead the public.
