A school teacher who attempted to rescue a student caught in a wave and swept away in the Kirinda sea during an educational tour has tragically drowned. The student who survived the accident is reportedly currently hospitalized and receiving treatment.

The deceased has been identified as N. M. M. Nujoom, a 56-year-old father of three, who resided in the Pilimala area of Alupotha, Badalkumbura, and served as a mathematics teacher at Badalkumbura Waikumbura Tamil Vidyalaya. The educational tour was organized by the principal of the school and several members of the teaching staff, along with a group of female students.

The tour group arrived at the Kirinda beach in the evening, around 4:30 PM. While a group of students was bathing in the sea, one student was suddenly caught in a rip current and swept away. Upon seeing this, the teacher immediately reacted and jumped into the sea to rescue her. However, both the teacher and the student were submerged in the rough waves.

Lifeguards and local residents immediately intervened and, after a strenuous effort, managed to rescue both of them and bring them ashore. Subsequently, steps were taken to quickly admit them to Debarawewa Base Hospital, but it was confirmed that the teacher had passed away after being admitted to the hospital. The injured student is currently still receiving inpatient treatment at the same hospital.

The inquest into the death of the deceased teacher was scheduled to be held on the 26th, and Kirinda Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
