Action has been taken to suspend a police sergeant attached to the Matara Divisional Intelligence Unit in connection with an incident where a tip-off was given in advance about a raid on a gambling den operating in the Akuressa area. It is reported that the Matara Senior Superintendent of Police's office has made this decision.

On April 14th, a group of Akuressa police officers went to raid the house where the said gambling den was operating. Police investigations have confirmed that at that time, this suspect intelligence unit sergeant, who was also on duty at the Akuressa Police, made a phone call to the owner of the house and gave a prior warning about the police raid.

In connection with this incident, a telephone data analysis was conducted on the relevant police officer, the person who operated the gambling den, and the police station. The phone records obtained during that investigation definitively revealed that the suspect officer had indeed given a tip-off to the homeowner that the police were coming.

Accordingly, the Matara Senior Superintendent of Police's office has acted to suspend the service of this officer under serious charges of failing to perform his duties properly, breaching the department's trust, and engaging in a corrupt act that harms the honor of the police service.
