14 foreigners who had planned to operate a massive cybercrime center by renting a hotel in the Waskaduwa area for an enormous sum of 6.6 million rupees monthly have been arrested by the Panadura Walana Central Anti-Corruption Strike Force. Police investigations have revealed that this criminal network was preparing to operate within the country under the guise of registering a private business, and they had planned to launch a large-scale operation using between 300 and 400 computers for this purpose.
Among the suspects arrested are 12 Chinese nationals and two Malaysian nationals. Police have confirmed that there are two women among the arrested Chinese nationals and one woman among the Malaysian nationals. Furthermore, preliminary investigations have revealed that none of these foreign suspects possess a valid visa to stay in Sri Lanka.
Mr. Rohan Olugala, Director of the Walana Anti-Corruption Force and Assistant Superintendent of Police, received a secret tip that a group of foreigners were engaged in illegal online activities within a private establishment located in the Waskaduwa area, which falls under the Kalutara North Police Division. Following surveillance duties carried out by the intelligence officers of that force, Police Sergeant (409) Wijeratne and Police Constable (39850) Ashan, who acted on the tip, obtained a search warrant from the Kalutara Magistrate's Court. Subsequently, a team of officers including Chief Police Inspector Ajith Shantha carried out this successful raid.
A senior police officer stated that many massive internet crimes that these international criminals intended to commit within the country, by renting this hotel belonging to a well-known businessman for a high monthly sum, were prevented through this swift operation. The operation was carried out under the legal supervision of Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya and under the direction of Chief Police Inspector Indika Weerasinghe, the OIC of the Walana Anti-Corruption Force. The arrested suspects are scheduled to be produced before the Kalutara Magistrate's Court.
