Steps have been taken to immediately suspend the service of a police sergeant who served at the Kurunegala Headquarters Police, for accepting a bribe of Rs. 4,000 from a woman to release a motorcycle that was in police custody.
This suspect police officer was attached to the Tourist Division of the Kurunegala Headquarters Police, and he was arrested on the 5th of last month based on a complaint made by the relevant woman.
It is reported that this sergeant had demanded money from a woman who came to prove ownership of a motorcycle that was in police custody and for which no owner had come forward, promising to release it quickly.
However, as he failed to release the motorcycle even after receiving the promised bribe, the aggrieved woman officially complained about this to Kurunegala Headquarters Chief Police Inspector Mr. Dhamma Channaka Kobbekaduwa.
Extensive investigations have now been launched into the incident under the instructions of Deputy Inspector General of Police for Kurunegala Division, Mr. Sarath Kumara, and Senior Superintendent of Police for Kurunegala Division, Mr. Tissa Vithanage.
