A report from the Mawanella area states that an 86-year-old man died after being run over by his own car while he was teaching a fifteen-year-old boy to drive it. Police stated that the accident occurred on Friday night in the Alupotha area on the Mawanella - Aluthnuwara road.
According to preliminary police investigations, it has been revealed that the deceased person himself drove the vehicle and stopped it near his house. Afterwards, with the intention of teaching the boy to drive, he handed over control of the vehicle to the said boy. At that moment, the car owner was walking in front of the vehicle to cross to the other side of the road.
While he was walking across the front of the vehicle, the stopped car suddenly moved forward and struck him. Although steps were immediately taken to admit the seriously injured elderly man to Mawanella Hospital, he later died there.
The deceased was an 86-year-old man residing in the Mawanella area. The 15-year-old boy who was in the driver's seat at the time of the accident has been taken into police custody, and the Sri Lanka Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
