A recent medical study has revealed that engaging in a suitable computer game can reduce the risk of developing dementia by about twenty-five percent. This computer game, named 'Double Decision', was primarily designed with the aim of improving the speed of information processing in the human brain.
This ability, which naturally slows down with age, is also considered a key indicator for identifying cognitive impairments. In this game, the user has to identify traffic signs that instantly appear on the screen, and performing this task amidst other surrounding obstacles provides special training for the brain.Nearly three thousand individuals over the age of sixty-five participated in this study, and they were divided into groups that trained various brain activities. Accordingly, they received this training for an hour, twice a week, over a period of six weeks, after which their medical records were studied long-term. As a result, it was confirmed that the risk of developing dementia was twenty-five percent lower for those who participated in additional training sessions using the 'Double Decision' game compared to the other groups.
According to researchers, this process helps improve brain plasticity, strengthening connections between nerve cells and building new ones. Furthermore, the thickening of the myelin sheath around nerve fibers speeds up message transmission through the brain, which gives the brain greater resilience against dementia. It has also been identified that this rapid training process contributes to maintaining the level of a chemical called acetylcholine, which is important for attention and learning.
However, experts emphasize that these computer games alone are not a sole solution for dementia. Such games are only suitable for use as part of a healthy lifestyle, and nutritious food, regular exercise, controlled blood pressure, and maintaining social connections are also very important. It is also reported that several brain-boosting games, including 'Double Decision', are currently available for download on smartphones for free or at a very low cost.
