Car-motorcycle collision: S.I. father dies, son in hospital

A severe road accident near Siriwardhana Vidyalaya on Old Colombo Road, Yatiyantota, has resulted in the death of a Sub-Inspector of Police, while his son sustained serious injuries. Yatiyantota Police report that the accident occurred on the night of the 25th when a car and a motorcycle collided.

The unfortunate victim of the accident was Sub-Inspector Horawala Aruna Deepthi Senarath Jayakody, 59, a resident of Garagoda area, who was attached to the Yatiyantota Police Station.

During his off-duty hours, the police officer had gone on his motorcycle to bring his son from Karawanella town to their home in Yatiyantota. Police investigations revealed that as the two were approaching Yatiyantota town, they encountered this accident, and the car that collided with the motorcycle lost control, veered off the road, and overturned towards a nearby house.

The son, who was riding pillion on the motorcycle and sustained serious injuries in the accident, was immediately admitted to Karawanella Base Hospital, where he is currently receiving inpatient treatment. Arrangements were also made for the post-mortem examination of the deceased Sub-Inspector to be conducted at the same hospital. Meanwhile, Yatiyantota Police, acting swiftly on the accident, arrested the driver of the car. He is a 26-year-old youth residing in the Magammana area of Dehiowita.

Police have taken steps to present the arrested driver to the Judicial Medical Officer at Avissawella Base Hospital to scientifically confirm whether he was intoxicated or had used any illicit drugs while driving at the time of the accident. A team of police officers is conducting further investigations into the incident under the direct instructions and guidance of the Acting OIC of Yatiyantota Police Station, Inspector Mahinda Padmasiri.
