The trial related to the large-scale fraud involving the supply of substandard Immunoglobulin medicine to state hospitals is currently underway before the Permanent Three-Judge High Court in Colombo. Former Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has been named as the main accused in connection with this massive irregularity, and in addition, the then Secretary to the Ministry of Health and a group of high-ranking officials representing the Medical Supplies Division have also been summoned before the court as other defendants.
Several serious charges have been filed against the suspects. These include criminal offenses such as misappropriation of public funds during the drug procurement process, causing a massive financial loss to the government, and distributing substandard drugs to the hospital network across the island using fraudulently prepared fake documents.
Legal investigations into this irregularity, which caused a great stir in the health sector, began after information regarding various allergies and dangerous health complications experienced by several patients who received the suspicious vaccine doses was revealed to the public.
