An Athukorala killer suddenly dies at Welikada

A detainee, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of former Polonnaruwa District Member of Parliament, Mr. Amarakirthi Athukorala, has died after falling from a building at Welikada Prison.

According to prison sources, the detainee, who sustained serious injuries due to the fall, was immediately hospitalized. However, it was confirmed that he died after being admitted to the hospital. No details have yet been revealed regarding how the fall occurred, and the relevant authorities have already launched a comprehensive investigation into the incident.

In 2022, twelve individuals were found guilty by the court in connection with the murder of Mr. Amarakirthi Athukorala and his security officer. Accordingly, all of them were sentenced to death on February 11th, and the person who died is one of those who received that sentence.
