A report has emerged of two young children dying in a fire at a hotel in the Batticaloa area, and it is suspected that a deep mystery lies behind the incident. On the evening of the 27th, a mattress in this hotel room caught fire, and the two young children died from inhaling the excessive smoke that emanated from it.
The Criminal Investigation Division of the Batticaloa Headquarters Police, suspecting foul play in connection with the incident, has now commenced extensive questioning of the deceased children's father. The two children who tragically died were five-year-old Chandani Nimasha and three-year-old Kasun Madhusanka. These two children, residents of Godage Watta, Getamanna, Beliatta, were immediately admitted to Batticaloa Hospital after the incident, but doctors confirmed that they had already passed away. This individual had arrived at this hotel in Batticaloa with his wife and three children five or six days prior. Investigations have revealed that they had rented a room on the fourth floor for 3,500 rupees per day and were staying there.
According to police investigations, an argument had erupted between the husband and wife while they were staying at the hotel. Subsequently, the wife left the hotel with their nine-year-old eldest child and returned to Beliatta. When questioned by the police regarding the children's deaths, the suspect father stated that his wife was suffering from cancer and was receiving treatment at a private hospital in the Kattankudy area. However, when police officers immediately went to the said hospital to investigate, it was revealed that no such woman was receiving treatment there, confirming his statement to be false.
Police are conducting investigations to ascertain the motive behind this individual providing such false information to the police and the public. Information is also emerging that he has obtained financial assistance from various individuals by claiming his wife has cancer. Furthermore, he has used a national identity card to conceal his true identity and impersonate another person. An officer from the Batticaloa Headquarters Police stated that this ID card belongs to a resident of Kadawatha, Kelaniya, and the actual owner had filed a complaint with the Kadawatha Police in 2024 regarding its loss.
The police state that this individual's wife is actually at her home in the Beliatta area and does not have any cancer. The woman has been informed to appear before the Batticaloa Headquarters Police yesterday (28th) to provide necessary information for further investigations. The police expect to fully corroborate all these facts once she arrives. Senior Superintendent of Police Lalith Leelarathna, in charge of the Batticaloa Division, conducted an on-site inspection of the hotel room where the incident occurred and developed strong suspicions about the father's behavior. Accordingly, police teams have launched a comprehensive investigation, focusing specifically on whether the father had any direct involvement or intervention in the deaths of the two young children.
