The Attorney General's Department has instructed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to officially apply for information related to the investigation concerning the invitation received by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe from the University of Wolverhampton in the United Kingdom.
The relevant letter of instruction, signed by Government Attorney Sajith Bandara, has been sent to the CID, informing them to carry out these activities in accordance with the Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters Act No. 25 of 2002.
Accordingly, the Criminal Investigation Department is currently taking steps to submit an application to re-obtain the information previously received from the relevant university via mail, through official channels.
When the case related to this incident was called before the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court this week, the CID stated that they would study the letter sent by the Attorney General's Department and inform the court about the next steps.
Furthermore, they informed the court that the information which the Attorney General instructed to re-obtain under the relevant act is already in their possession.
In addition, the Criminal Investigation Department has also presented to the court information related to the statement recorded from former First Lady Maithree Wickremesinghe regarding the relevant United Kingdom tour under investigation.
