A Revolution in Vehicle Sales in China: Geely Sales Surpass BYD

Geely Group, a leading automobile manufacturing company in China, is successfully adapting to changes in global market demand and energy prices, thereby consolidating its dominance in the automotive sector. Surpassing even BYD, which recorded the highest electric vehicle sales globally last year, Geely Group has managed to become the best-selling car brand in China during the first two months of this year.

The company, which has more than doubled its exports to Europe, the Middle East, and other Asian countries, is notably posing a strong challenge to the world's most powerful automakers in their home country.

Even in an environment where consumer preferences are rapidly changing, maintaining production across all four vehicle categories—petrol, gas-electric hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and full electric vehicles—has been a key reason for Geely's success. With the end of the Chinese government's subsidies for electric vehicles, EV sales slowed down, and instead, demand for hybrid vehicles increased. Recognizing this market shift, Geely quickly managed to pivot its production process in that direction, and this flexibility has given them a competitive advantage.

Founded in 1998 by entrepreneur Li Shufu, the company has become a global automotive giant in less than thirty years, acquiring international brands such as Volvo and Lotus. When Mr. Li purchased the Volvo brand from Ford in 2010, many called it an impractical endeavor, but today he has modernized and expanded these brands worldwide. Thanks to the large-scale production process using robotic technology and modern machinery in Geely factories located in Hangzhou, China, they sold three million vehicles last year alone, which is a 39% increase compared to the previous year.

Although tax barriers imposed by the United States have made it difficult for Chinese automakers to enter that market, Geely Group has focused its attention on Southeast Asia, Australia, Latin America, and Africa. They are also working to introduce high-tech luxury electric vehicles to the market through their newest brand, Zeekr. Despite changing global political situations and tax policies, Geely Group is currently engaged in a strategic journey to penetrate markets using its network of factories located in various countries.
