Eravur Police have arrested a 14-year-old schoolboy who allegedly strangled and killed his younger sister after a dispute over not providing a mobile phone escalated, and then placed her body in a water tank in the bathroom. The victim has been identified as Satnathan Saththissa, an eleven-year-old girl residing in the Vettuvell or Adhikaran Road area of Eravur.
According to information revealed by police investigations, the mother of these children is employed abroad, and on the 28th of last month, when the incident occurred, the father had also left the house for work. At that time, a conflict arose between the brother and sister, who were alone at home, regarding a mobile phone, as the brother had asked his sister for the phone to watch TikTok videos.
Preliminary investigations have revealed that the enraged suspect brother, due to her refusal to give the phone, assaulted and strangled her. He then took the unconscious or deceased girl's body to the bathroom, placed it in the water tank, and went to a neighbor's house as if he knew nothing. When the father returned home after work and checked on the children, he found his daughter fallen inside the water tank in the bathroom. Although immediate steps were taken to hospitalize her, doctors confirmed that she had already passed away by then.
Subsequently, during questioning by Eravur Police, the suspect student confessed to killing his younger sister. To definitively ascertain whether the girl's death was caused by strangulation or occurred after being placed in the water tank, the body has been deposited at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital. The arrested suspect is scheduled to be produced before the court.
