
The General Manager of the Arachchikattuwa Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society was arrested by the Arachchikattuwa Police the day before yesterday (04) on charges of stealing a stock of important documents related to alleged financial irregularities that occurred at the society during the past period. Police investigations have revealed that he secretly took away this stock of documents, which was kept very securely inside the office, by placing them in a fertilizer bag.
The person arrested by the police is Sujith Dewapriya Weerawansa, a resident of Sigiri Walawwatta, Madampe. After being produced before the Chilaw Magistrate's Court on the same day of his arrest, the suspect General Manager has been ordered by the Magistrate to be remanded until the upcoming 9th.
Regarding this incident, the Chairman of the Arachchikattuwa Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society had officially lodged a complaint with the Arachchikattuwa Police last Friday. In the complaint, the Chairman further stated that the CCTV camera system installed inside the cooperative office had been deliberately deactivated at the time the relevant documents were stolen.
Acting immediately on the received complaint, the police, following their investigations, arrested the General Manager on suspicion and subsequently managed to recover the stolen stock of documents hidden in his house. A team of officers from the Arachchikattuwa Police is conducting further extensive investigations into this incident under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Mr. Rohan Perera.
