Political sources state that Vajira Abeywardena, Chairman of the United National Party, held several secret meetings with ambassadors and high commissioners of several powerful countries in Sri Lanka. These meetings have drawn special attention because they were reportedly held in a very limited setting without official public disclosure.
These meetings have garnered more attention because Vajira Abeywardena commenced such diplomatic meetings immediately upon his return to the country after the former President and United National Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe met in Singapore. Accordingly, various reports regarding the political significance of these discussions are currently being published.
Meanwhile, it is also reported that the health condition of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who is receiving treatment in Singapore after surgery, is satisfactorily improving. Although he has received permission from doctors to leave the hospital, it is stated that he has decided to spend a few more days resting under medical supervision.
Political sources also state that several individuals in his close circle had suggested that Ranil Wickremesinghe's return to Sri Lanka after the Sinhala and Hindu New Year would be appropriate. However, it is reported that amidst suggestions from friends and close associates that he should continue to rest in Singapore, Ranil Wickremesinghe has communicated that his stance is to return to Sri Lanka as soon as possible.
Accordingly, Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to return to Sri Lanka within the next ten days. Political observers believe that this return could also spark new discussions regarding the future political activities of the United National Party.
