The "Walk for Peace," which has garnered significant international attention, is currently traversing the island. The Sri Lanka Police has made a special request to the public to act with strict discipline and great restraint to ensure its success. This unique walk, led by the Vietnamese Venerable Pannyakara Thero, the Maha Sangha, and a delegation of foreign dignitaries, commenced its journey on April 21st, after receiving blessings from the historic Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura.
This journey, which began in this manner, is scheduled to pass through the sacred city of Dambulla, covering areas such as Nalal, Matale, Kandy, Kadugannawa, and Kegalle, then proceeding through Tholangamuwa, Kajugama, Yakkala, Mahara, and Kelaniya. The final destination of this multi-day pedestrian journey is Independence Square in Colombo, and the group plans to reach that location on April 28th.
A special feature of this World Peace Walk is the participation of "Aloka," a dog that enjoys immense popularity worldwide. Due to this, large crowds can be seen gathered on both sides of the road these days to show respect for the walk. However, the police point out that certain disruptive situations have been reported, such as some individuals gathering on the roadside pushing each other, attempting to take unnecessary photos and videos, and trying to touch the dog.
Authorities emphasize that such activities cause great inconvenience to the Venerable Theros and the rest of the delegation participating in this esteemed walk, and severely hinder their journey. Therefore, the police further inform the public to provide support in a manner that ensures their safety, without any violent or disruptive behavior when showing respect for the walk.
