The International Automobile Federation (FIA) has expressed its profound regret regarding the unfortunate accident that occurred during the South American Rally Championship in Mina Clavero, Córdoba province, Argentina. One spectator was killed and two others were injured in the accident, and the world motorsport governing body has extended its condolences to the family members of the deceased.
According to reports, the Volkswagen Polo driven by Paraguayan Didier Arias and Héctor Núñez lost control while attempting to take a high-speed turn and crashed into the spectator area. The fatal accident occurred in the 'Giulio Cesare' section of the rally, where the out-of-control vehicle reportedly rolled several times before entering the crowd of spectators.
Authorities have confirmed that 25-year-old Bryan Zarate, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died after being hospitalized. Additionally, a 40-year-old woman with a fractured ankle and her young daughter, who sustained minor injuries, have been referred for medical treatment, and their condition is reported to be non-life-threatening.
In an official statement, the FIA stated that it was deeply shocked by the distressing news from the second stage of the Codasur Rally Championship. The statement further expressed support for the injured and all those affected by the accident, and commended the swift response of the emergency services teams who immediately provided medical assistance.
Following the accident, organizers immediately suspended the relevant stage of the rally and later decided to officially cancel the entire event. A special crisis management committee, including the Automobile Club of Argentina (ACA) and local authorities, has also been established to conduct a formal investigation into the incident and provide necessary support to those affected.
This accident has once again drawn global attention to the inherent risks of rally sports, which involve high speeds and challenging tracks, and has sparked a discussion about existing spectator safety protocols. Experts point out that despite prohibitions against spectators gathering in outer zones of turns, some individuals position themselves in dangerous locations for a better view, which is a primary cause of such tragedies.
