If you want to lose weight, beef is free for Chinese people

Losing weight is a tearful, bitter experience for many. But would you believe it if you were told that in exchange for the fat you sweat off, you would be given delicious, high-quality beef?

This dream has come true through a wonderful health program currently being implemented by the local authorities of Shanbei, Wuxi City, in China's eastern Jiangsu Province. Under this groundbreaking project, named "Trade Fat for Beef," residents are offered beef as a reward proportional to the amount of weight they lose.

With the news spreading on social media, over 2,400 people registered within a short period of three days, clearly demonstrating its popularity. In a context where nearly twenty percent of children between the ages of six and seventeen suffer from obesity, this was an excellent opportunity for individuals like Shu Fangqiang, who had a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30. For him, who joined this challenge with the goal of losing about 20 kilograms, the beef reward is merely a bonus for his healthy life.

This wonderful program is not merely for entertainment. Currently, more than half of China's adult population is suffering from obesity or being overweight, and experts warn that this situation will exceed seventy percent by 2030. This project can be described as a successful grassroots effort, in line with the three-year national weight management plan recently introduced by the National Health Commission. Here, participants have the opportunity to receive rewards of varying values, up to a maximum weight loss of 10 kilograms: 500 grams of boneless beef for every 0.5 kilograms lost, and 500 grams of oxtail for every 1 kilogram lost.

However, dangerously rapid weight loss due to greed for rewards is not allowed here. The use of weight loss drugs, fasting, or other extreme methods for weight loss is strictly prohibited, and achieving results solely through proper diet and exercise is the authorities' main condition. Although jokes have been created on social media to the extent that people from other areas might consider moving to this region, this privilege is limited to employees registered with health insurance in the Shanbei region.

While giving meat back in exchange for melted fat might seem somewhat ironic, it is no secret that this is a wonderful concept that has rallied people with smiles and enthusiasm against a silently growing national health crisis.
