A former local council member, representing an independent group, has been arrested by the police with 107 grams of 'Ice' (methamphetamine) during a raid conducted in the Kalmunai area, following confidential information received by the Ampara Divisional Anti-Corruption Unit.




The said consignment of drugs had been transported via a courier service, disguised as a toy parcel, and was very cleverly hidden in the neck area of a small toy bear. Following intelligence information received by police officers, and after subjecting the suspect's house to an intense search for several hours, investigation teams were able to discover this consignment of 'Ice' drugs hidden inside the toy.

In addition to the drugs, an electronic scale suspected to have been used for trafficking, two mobile phones, and a certain amount of money have also been taken into police custody. The arrested suspect, the former council member, and the case exhibits have now been handed over to the Kalmunai Headquarters Police for further legal and judicial proceedings.




This search operation was carried out under the instructions of Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police (Attorney-at-Law) Varuna Jayasundara, in charge of the Eastern Division, and the orders of Ampara District Deputy Inspector General of Police Sujith Wedamulla. For this raid, conducted under the full supervision of Ampara Divisional Superintendent of Police Priyantha Bandara Kasthuriarachchi and the direction of Ampara District Assistant Superintendent of Police  Sampath Wickramarathne, a team of police officers led by Sub-Inspector K.A.M. Priyankara, the OIC of the Ampara District Anti-Corruption Unit, actively contributed.
