The terrifying question of whether American political history is written in blood and bullets has once again emerged before the world.
On the night of April 25th, during the annual dinner of the White House Correspondents' Association held at the Hilton Hotel in Washington, an armed youth fired shots targeting President Donald Trump, sending the entire America into a state of shock. The fact that this was Donald Trump's first attendance at this traditional event as president further intensified the seriousness of the incident.
With the sound of gunshots near the main security checkpoint, an extremely dangerous atmosphere was created as over two thousand six hundred distinguished guests in the dining hall dived under tables for cover. Secret Service officers immediately sprang into action, safely removing the President and his wife Melania Trump from the stage, during which the President suffered a minor fall. Although no one was killed in the attack, a bullet striking the bulletproof vest of a security officer attempting to subdue the suspect indicates the danger they faced that night.
The 31-year-old Californian behind this attack, Cole Thomas Allen, is no ordinary criminal. A mechanical engineer and once an award-winning teacher, he introduced himself as the "Friendly Federal Assassin" in a lengthy message sent to his family members just minutes before the attack. Strongly opposing the policies of the Trump administration and expressing impulsive views, he traveled a long distance by train from Los Angeles and launched this plan with several weapons. Notably, the attempt to assassinate then-President Ronald Reagan in 1981 also took place at this historic hotel, reawakening past memories for American security forces.
Although the suspect has been arrested and charged with several serious federal offenses, including attempted murder, the security issues arising from this incident are not minor. How an armed individual was able to get so close to the President's location amidst strict security cordons, and the social tragedy indicated by the arming of educated youth for political ideologies, are significant challenges facing the authorities.
Every attempt to change the course of politics with a bullet ultimately leaves behind only a terrifying premonition of the demise of democracy.
