The Traffic Division of the Madampe Police successfully chased down and arrested a vegetable transport lorry that disregarded police orders and drove off in the Madampe area on the Puttalam - Colombo main road yesterday (21) evening. During the search of the lorry, two hundred and sixteen thousand (216,000) illegal drug pills, valued at approximately three and a half crore rupees, which were cleverly hidden and transported, were taken into police custody, and one suspect connected to the incident has also been arrested.




This emergency traffic operation was launched based on specific information received by Police Constable Jayathilaka (84566), who is attached to the Traffic Division of the Madampe Police. Although police officers signaled the driver of the vegetable-laden lorry to stop, the driver disregarded the signal and continued driving, prompting officers to chase after the vehicle and take it into their custody.

Subsequently, the arrested lorry was taken to the Madampe Police Station for further investigations. There, officers found three suspicious boxes hidden beneath sacks of vegetables, and it was confirmed that each of these boxes, prepared like regular medicine packaging, contained 72,000 drug pills, totaling 216,000 pills.




Preliminary police investigations have revealed that this consignment of illegal drug pills was being transported from the Kalpitiya, Norochcholai area to Colombo. The police state that this type of pill is used as a substitute by severely drug-addicted individuals when they cannot obtain drugs. The suspect arrested in connection with the incident is scheduled to be produced before the court.
