The cause of death of the thirty-five-year-old nurse who served at the Aranayake Divisional Hospital was confirmed by the judicial medical examination as severe blood loss and shock due to stabbing and cutting her chest with a blunt weapon. The Aranayake Police state that this conclusion was reached during the post-mortem examination conducted yesterday (03) by Specialist Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Ruchira Nadeera of the Kegalle General Hospital.




The unfortunate victim has been identified as Ilanganthilaka Mohottige Ruwini Madushika, a mother of one, who originally resided in the Gawilipitiya Pansalawatta area of Aranayake. Her husband, with whom she was married and who works for an authority in the Colombo area, had some disagreements between them for a long time, as revealed by police investigations. Due to this, the husband occasionally visited the house, and at the time of the murder, she was temporarily residing in a rented house in the Mawathagoda Dippitiya area of Aranayake with her seven-year-old son.

During this period, a close friendship had developed between the deceased nurse and a thirty-three-year-old man residing in Nikapitiya, Ussapitiya, Mawanella, who works for the Road Development Authority. On the evening of the 1st, when she returned to her temporary residence after work, an argument occurred with the said person. Following the escalation of the dispute, the acquaintance pursued her as she ran towards the Aranayake - Mawanella main road around 7:30 PM and launched this inhumane attack.




The seriously injured nurse, who had fallen on the road after the attack, was spotted by a neighboring woman who alerted others, and steps were taken to quickly admit her to the Aranayake Divisional Hospital by a three-wheeler. However, Dr. Renuka Gunapala confirmed that she had already passed away by the time she was brought to the hospital, and this information was conveyed to the Aranayake Police via telephone.

Upon receiving news of the incident, a comprehensive investigation was launched under the direct supervision of Senior Superintendent of Police Anuruddha Bandaranayake and Assistant Superintendent of Police Wasantha Alahakoon of the Kegalle Division, and under the instructions of Aranayake Police Station OIC Chief Police Inspector Rahula Bandara Kandewatta. Police Inspector Dissanayake, Police Sergeants Ashoka (33443), Marasinghe (22565), Lalith (42381), Kulasuriya (60413), Police Constable Bandara (96375), and Woman Police Constable Udeshika (9149) were involved in this, with Chief Police Inspector Thiwanka Dehimadu and Sub-Inspector Sirimanna of the Kegalle Division Crime Scene Investigation Laboratory also assisting.



Following the police report, the Acting Magistrate of Mawanella, Ms. Nishetha Kumari Karunathilaka, conducted an initial magisterial inquiry at the crime scene and the hospital, ordering a post-mortem examination of the body and the arrest of the suspect. Accordingly, the suspect, Manoj Pathum Akalanka of Heenwella Gedara, residing at Laksiri House, Nikapitiya, Ussapitiya, who was arrested by the Aranayake Police on the 2nd, has been remanded until the 16th after being produced before the court.
