Former Member of Parliament Indika Anuruddha, addressing a 'Pohottuwa' media briefing, stated that the government declared Wednesday as a holiday instead of Monday to prevent people from enjoying themselves, driven by a hypocritical motive. He says:
"So this is how it is, this is how the government allows people to be happy.
That's what there is to say, how the government allows people to be happy.
Because, this is a good example of how hypocritical and cunning a policy those in the government are implementing.
If Monday had been given as a holiday, perhaps people would have enjoyed that long holiday from Saturday and Sunday, including Monday.
So the government thinks, "No, these people will travel." Why, government ministers are now saying not to make unnecessary trips. What are these unnecessary trips?
Is there such a thing as unnecessary travel for someone in today's public life?
Then what they consider unnecessary travel must be going on a pilgrimage.
Ah... or visiting a relative, or going on a pleasure trip.
So, they wrote at the top of their policy statement that they would allow people to enjoy themselves.
Didn't they say 'a life full of happiness' or something? They said they would give happiness, my goodness, to the fullest!
So, that's what has been done with these actions.
Instead of doing things that are neither here nor there, if there is no fuel, people will only do their essential things.
For example, even when we attend a meeting, two or three of our fellow MPs gather and go in one vehicle. Those who used to go in three vehicles now go in one vehicle.
So these are normal things for the people. They know how to manage them.
The government doesn't need to interfere in these matters and show its cunningness.
So that's why Wednesday, that's what I said, these people have a spiritual connection with Wednesday. That's why they've come to the point where they've put people's happiness aside, saying if you want to be happy, choose 'Motherland or Death'."
