A deeply regrettable incident was reported recently where a seven-year-old schoolboy died after being run over by a vehicle belonging to Tilak Rajakaruna, the director of Lexicon International School located in Mahaiyawa, Kandy. As the mother of this young child, Ravindu Kumarage, is currently abroad in Israel, the family's relatives have had to keep the child's body in a funeral parlor in Kandy for five days until she returns to the island.
Due to the ongoing war these days, the mother is also facing difficulties in returning home.According to Sarath Kumarage, the father of the deceased child, he dropped off all three of his sons at school as usual on the 12th. After the children entered the school gate, he returned home and received a phone call around 10:40 AM informing him that his youngest son had been in an accident and admitted to the Kandy National Hospital. Upon immediately rushing to the hospital, he was informed by the principal and a doctor there that the child had passed away. He strongly urges the authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into his son's death and to ensure that such a tragedy never befalls any other child again.
About eight months ago, the child's mother left for a job in Israel with the aim of building the family's economy. Initially, the family members told her that the child was in the intensive care unit to make it easier for her to cope with the shock. However, she learned the truth through information circulating on the internet, and the body has been kept in a funeral parlor until she arrives on the island. Meanwhile, the deceased child's two elder brothers, students in grade eight and grade six, still believe that their younger brother has only sustained injuries. It is also reported that this family was residing in a rented house in the Polgolla area for the convenience of the children's schooling.
This sudden loss has deeply shocked other family members as well. Mr. A.G. Appuhami, the 85-year-old father of the deceased child's mother, stated that all three children had called him on the morning of the accident. He further added that if this news were told to the bedridden ailing grandmother, she would not be able to bear it at all. Furthermore, Mr. S.K. Bandara, the mother's brother who identified the child's body, emphasized that such an accident occurring within a school, which should be a safe place, cannot be taken lightly, and therefore, the law must be strictly enforced regardless of the status of the culprits.
The post-mortem examination conducted on the 13th by Judicial Medical Officer Kasun Bandara Ekanayake of the Kandy National Hospital confirmed that the death was caused by severe injuries sustained in a vehicle accident. The director of the international school, suspected of causing the accident, was arrested by the Kandy Police Traffic Division and remanded until the 20th after being produced in court. Further investigations into this matter are being carried out by a team of officers, including Traffic Division OIC Pradeep Kottagoda, under the direction of Chief Police Inspector Rasika Sampath, and on the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police Anuruddha Bandara Hakmana, who is in charge of the Kandy Division.
