The thrilling final match of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup Cricket tournament commenced today, the 8th, at the renowned Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India, and the first innings has now concluded. The New Zealand team, having won the toss, decided to field first, thus requiring the current champions, the Indian team, to bat first.

Before this day-night match, which began at 7:00 PM Indian time, a spectacular closing ceremony featuring a concert by the famous singer Ricky Martin was held with the participation of a large crowd.

Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, who opened the Indian innings, engaged in an aggressive batting display, managing to score 92 runs without losing any wickets during the Powerplay overs. This marked the highest Powerplay score ever recorded in a T20 World Cup final, as well as equaling a record in the overall tournament history. Abhishek managed to score a rapid half-century in 18 balls, while Samson, playing a magnificent innings, was dismissed for 89 runs, just shy of his century. Their 98-run partnership for the first wicket became the strong foundation of the Indian innings.

Although Ishan Kishan also added some quick runs to the Indian scoreboard, the Indian score temporarily suffered a setback at 204 for 4 wickets when Samson, Kishan, and Suryakumar Yadav were all dismissed in a single over bowled by James Neesham. Nevertheless, captain Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya contributed to stabilizing the innings to some extent, and strong hits by Shivam Dube in the latter part of the innings, along with 24 runs scored in the final over, allowed India to post a massive total of 255 for 5 wickets at the end of their allotted 20 overs. This was the third instance in this tournament where India surpassed the 250-run mark, clearly reflecting their aggressive playing style.

The New Zealand team, entering the field to chase a highly challenging target of 256 runs, will have to face a formidable Indian bowling attack comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and spin bowlers. New Zealand, being in high spirits after defeating South Africa in the semi-final, aimed to defeat the host team and win their maiden T20 World Cup. In this tournament, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka from February 7 to March 8, India has a historic opportunity in this match to become the first team in the world to win a World Cup treble (after 2007 and 2024) by defending the championship on their home soil.
