A new method for re-obtaining the National Fuel Pass or QR code for vehicles previously registered under a different mobile phone number has been introduced from today (19).

Owners of vehicles registered for the fuel QR code before March 14, 2026, faced various difficulties due to the phone number used for registration no longer being in use or being owned by another party. This latest feature provides an opportunity for the public to overcome this problem and easily update their QR code.

To utilize this new facility, it is mandatory to correctly verify the identity of the relevant vehicle, and for this, both the vehicle registration number and its chassis number must be entered into the system. Even if a vehicle was registered with a different phone number before March 14, 2026, after entering the correct information, the existing old registration can be canceled, and the vehicle can be registered under a new phone number. By selecting the 'Override' option in the system, the old account associated with the vehicle will be completely deleted from the database, and the user's new account with updated information will become active immediately.

As the previous account is canceled through this procedure, the access and privileges previously held by the user registered for that vehicle will be completely lost. Accordingly, the true owner of a vehicle that was previously linked to someone else's active or inactive phone number can now obtain their fuel quota without any hindrance. However, the Ministry of Digital Economy further emphasizes that removing fuel QR data for someone else's vehicle without legal ownership is a serious offense punishable by law.

Vehicle registration using this new facility can be done by visiting the official website https://fuelpass.gov.lk/.
