Through the struggle, the people expected to completely eradicate fraud and corruption. That is why a new government was appointed for change.
However, it is regrettable that responsible officials did not understand the government's intention. Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, who served as the Secretary of the Ministry of Roads and Transport of the North Western Provincial Council, and was a qualified person in that regard, was appointed to the post of Commissioner General of Motor Traffic in the past year 2025following a Cabinet decision, understanding him to be a qualified officer capable of taking on responsibilities. A brief ceremony was held in April 2025 when he assumed duties, and Deputy Minister of Highways, Dr. Prasanna Gunasekara, also participated.
Addressing the gathering present there, the Deputy Minister said,
“The Department of Motor Traffic is an institution that provides a great service to the country and society, and is very close to the people. Among the institutions under the Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation, it is an institution most closely connected to the public. This institution, which provides essential services to the people including obtaining driving licenses and vehicle registration,
was disheartened among the public due to various irregularities that occurred in the past. The institution had to face various problems because the recommendations of the COPA committee were not implemented. The new administration must commit to providing a more qualitative service to the people, without creating such problems again. It must move forward, free from fraud and corruption, integrating with the government's journey of renaissance.” he had stated.
Commenting here, the said Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Mr. Kamal Amarasinghe, stated, “In accordance with government policies, a public-friendly, exemplary service will be provided in the future. The aim is to provide the people with a high-level service expected by the government led by His Excellency the President. Furthermore, I and my staff are committed to a systematic, effective, and friendly service.”
he said, but it appears he has changed within a few months.
He was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department for directly aiding and abetting the illegal alteration of a cab's chassis number and its fraudulent registration, while he had served in this position for 11 months. It is not yet revealed whether he has committed further offenses.
He is scheduled to be produced before the court today.
