A high-ranking diplomat from Cuba has warned that the country is already preparing for a potential military invasion by the United States. Due to oil sanctions imposed against Cuba, the island nation is facing its biggest energy crisis in decades, and discussions between the two countries regarding this have been ongoing for several weeks.

However, in recent days, high-ranking administration officials, including Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have strongly expressed their views on the prospects of changing the regime in Cuba. Rubio recently emphasized that a new group of people is needed to govern Cuba.

Speaking to the media, President Trump stated that he believes he will have the honor of acquiring Cuba. He further added that whether it's liberating or acquiring the country, he thinks he can do whatever he wants with Cuba. In light of this situation, Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio stated in a television interview that ignoring the possibility of a conflict with the United States would be a naive act on the part of Cuban leaders. He clarified that their military is always ready, and they are especially prepared for a potential military invasion. However, the minister further stated that Cuba has no dispute with the United States and remains open to negotiations while retaining the right to defend its country.

Critics point out that holding discussions between the two countries offers no comfort to Cuban authorities. Previously, before carrying out military interventions against Iran and Venezuela, the US government was also holding discussions with those countries. Last January, former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was arrested in Caracas, and he and his wife are currently facing drug trafficking charges in the United States. The Atlantic magazine reported that the Trump administration could implement a similar effort in Cuba, considering the operation carried out in Caracas as a rehearsal for Havana.

Cuba, which produces only about forty percent of the fuel needed to sustain its economy, previously relied heavily on fuel supplies from Venezuela. Following Maduro's arrest, Trump has imposed severe sanctions on Cuba and threatened to impose tariffs on any country that sells oil to the island. So far this year, Cuba has not received any oil shipments, and as a result, they are currently facing the worst energy crisis seen in decades. Last Saturday, the Cuban Ministry of Energy reported a complete collapse of the national power grid. Although authorities had managed to restore electricity to some areas of Havana by Sunday, the majority of the country's 10 million population remain in the dark.

This is the second major power outage to affect Cuba in less than a week. Although public protests are usually rare in Cuba, these frequent power cuts have led to civil unrest, with schools closing and garbage piling up on the streets. Residents of Havana are banging pots and pans to express their protest, and in some cases, fires have been set to block main roads. Deputy Foreign Minister Fernandez de Cossio emphasized that Cuba expects to receive the necessary fuel and that this embargo imposed by the United States cannot be maintained forever.
