Steps have now been taken to utilize the special room at Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, which was previously reserved exclusively for the use of the Executive President, for the treatment of the general public. The Presidential Media Division announces that the Ministry of Health and the Hospital Administration have jointly made this decision based on the instructions given by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
This hospital was established in 1984 with a capacity of one thousand beds, as a grant provided by the Japanese government. Outside of that initial plan, this specific room, numbered 1001, was added to the hospital solely for the President's personal use.
During the forty-two years since the hospital's inception, this room has been used on a very limited number of occasions. Nevertheless, with the expectation that a President might be hospitalized in an emergency, the hospital has maintained it for over four decades without allowing ordinary patients to use it at any time.
From today, any ordinary patient admitted to the hospital will have the opportunity to receive treatment through this special room. The Presidential Media Division further points out that this measure has been taken in line with the current government's policy of more effectively utilizing government resources and state property for the health needs of the public.
