Iranian authorities announced in an official statement released on Sunday that Ayatollah Alireza Arafi, a religious member of the Guardian Council, has been chosen for the country's interim leadership council.
Mohsen Dehna, spokesperson for Iran's Expediency Discernment Council, stated in a post on the American social media company X that this appointment has been made in accordance with Article 111 of the Iranian Constitution.
He explained that until a new supreme leader is chosen, a temporary leadership council will be formed, consisting of the country's president (Masoud Pezeshkian), the head of the judiciary, and one religious member of the Guardian Council.
Dehna further stated that the council has chosen Mr. Arafi as its religious representative to ensure the continuity of leadership, and that the Assembly of Experts will work to elect a permanent leader as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, Iran confirmed on Sunday that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and several other high-ranking officials had died due to Israeli and American attacks on Iran.
