With the severe dry weather affecting the central hills, a sudden fire broke out yesterday (26) around 2.00 PM in a conservation area with illuk grass in the Hatton, Dikoya – Dorawala estate.

Due to the severe dry weather and strong winds prevailing in the area, the fire has spread rapidly throughout the estate. It is reported that workers of the estate are making strenuous efforts to control the further spread of the fire.

Due to the intense sunlight affecting the central hills these days, many water springs in the area are drying up. Environmentalists point out that in such a context, setting fire to reserves and forests poses a severe threat of further drying up and destruction of existing water springs.
