In connection with the shooting and killing of a lawyer and his wife in a supermarket car park near the Akuregoda Tri-Forces Headquarters, four individuals, including two brothers suspected of transporting firearms, have been arrested by the police. The victims of this brutal crime, which occurred around 5:20 PM on the 13th, were 45-year-old lawyer Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his 42-year-old wife Nisansala Mani.

Two assassins, using a T-56 assault rifle and a pistol, intercepted the vehicle the couple was traveling in and carried out the shooting. Their car, which had fled towards Kottawa, collided with a motorcycle, and its license plate was found abandoned at the scene. Later, the police discovered the suspects' getaway car burnt and destroyed near the Agaliya Mulkada Bridge in Baddegama.

These arrests were made as a result of extensive investigations carried out by twelve police teams using CCTV footage related to the incident. Two brothers from the same family, aged 20 and 24, residing in Athurugiriya, were arrested in the Kottawa area on the charge of bringing and providing the necessary firearms to the shooters in a black car near Akuregoda. An individual who provided lodging facilities to these brothers is also among those arrested, and preliminary investigations have confirmed that this crime was carried out under the direction of organized criminals known as Malwane Tutu and Modara Nipun.

The black car used for transporting the weapons has also been taken into police custody, and operations are still underway to arrest three more suspects.

The final rites for the bodies of the brutally murdered lawyer and his wife were held this afternoon at the Suduwella family cemetery in Pitigala, with a large number of people in attendance. The loss of parents who were like guiding mentors to their children has caused deep shock, and the gathered crowd strongly emphasized that the culture of murder operating in this country must be completely eradicated. For the first time since 2012, a group of lawyers protested, urging authorities to find the root cause of this crime and ensure that such incidents never happen again.
