The police have found a car, believed to have been used by suspects in the shooting death of a lawyer and his wife at a supermarket car park in Thalagama, Athurugiriya, burnt in the Baddegama area of Galle. This brutal crime occurred on February 13th near the Athurugiriya Army Headquarters, claiming the lives of 44-year-old lawyer Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his 42-year-old wife.




Based on information received that the car bearing the number 'EP KI 7738', suspected to have been used by the unknown assailants to flee after committing this double murder, was abandoned on a by-road in Kuttiyawatta, Agaliya, Baddegama, Galle, the Nugegoda Divisional Criminal Investigation Bureau has commenced investigations. Investigation units confirm that the car was still burning when police officers arrived at the scene.

Police currently strongly suspect that this murder was orchestrated by the organized criminal known as 'Karandeniye Sudda' alias Jayalath Silva, who is hiding abroad. The deceased lawyer had previously appeared for the said criminal's court cases and later also appeared for the court cases of his main rival, 'Loku Patty'. Accordingly, investigations are revealing that this murder was planned based on the suspicion that Karandeniye Sudda's information was provided to the rival party.




However, commenting on this incident previously, Police Media Spokesperson Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wuttler stated that it was not officially confirmed in the initial stages that the deceased lawyer had appeared for an organized crime gang or had received death threats. Nevertheless, currently, ten special police teams, including the Criminal Investigation Department, the Police Special Task Force, and the Colombo Crime Division, have jointly launched a comprehensive operation, and it has been identified that the killers may have fled through Homagama, Pothuarawa Road, Athurugiriya, Kottawa, and Makumbura areas to reach Baddegama.

The police are currently seeking public assistance to apprehend the suspects.
