New Zealand recorded a massive 61-run victory in the Super Eight match held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, completely shattering Sri Lanka's T20 World Cup hopes.

Although Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first, the New Zealand players made the most of the spin-friendly pitch, knocking co-hosts Sri Lanka out of the tournament.

Despite Dilshan Madushanka's swinging deliveries, New Zealand's opening batsmen got off to a quick start, and their wickets began to fall with Maheesh Theekshana dismissing Finn Allen. Subsequently, Tim Seifert was also dismissed after a catch by Kamindu Mendis, after which Rachin Ravindra and Glenn Phillips attempted to rebuild the innings. However, after Dushmantha Chameera dismissed Phillips, and with Theekshana and Dunith Wellalage coming into action, New Zealand's scoreboard, which read 76 for 2, collapsed to 84 for 6.

Cole McConchie and captain Mitchell Santner, who revived New Zealand's innings from a difficult situation, built an excellent partnership. McConchie remained unbeaten on 31 runs from 23 balls, while Santner, engaging in an aggressive batting display, scored 47 runs with massive sixes. They managed to score 70 runs in the last four overs alone, allowing New Zealand to reach a challenging total of 168 runs for 7 wickets at the end of the allotted 20 overs.

Matt Henry succeeded in dismissing Pathum Nissanka with the very first ball of the innings, disrupting Sri Lanka's chase of 169 runs. Henry then also dismissed Charith Asalanka, crippling Sri Lanka's top order, and by the end of the Powerplay, Sri Lanka had recorded the slowest start in the tournament so far, with 20 runs for 2 wickets. Rachin Ravindra's success in dismissing Kusal Mendis, Pawan Rathnayake, Dasun Shanaka, and Dushan Hemantha while they tried to increase the scoring rate on the difficult pitch became the biggest setback for Sri Lanka's innings.

Although Kamindu Mendis put up some fight, scoring 31 runs, Sri Lanka could only manage 107 runs for 8 wickets at the end of the allotted 20 overs. Rachin Ravindra delivered an excellent bowling performance, taking 4 wickets for 27 runs. With this result, Sri Lanka is officially eliminated from the World Cup tournament, and New Zealand has further complicated Pakistan's Net Run Rate issue.
