T20 World Cup: India defeats Pakistan, advances to Super 8s

The Indian team today (15) achieved a magnificent victory, defeating their traditional rivals Pakistan by 61 runs in the 27th match played under Group 'A' of the 2026 ICC Men's T20 World Cup tournament. In Colombo R.

Premadasa Stadium, Pakistan captain Salman Agha won the toss and decided to bowl first. Although there was no rain interruption, the match was played on a somewhat challenging and slow pitch amidst cloudy weather.

At the start of the match, the Indian innings suffered a setback with Abhishek Sharma getting out for a duck. However, opening batsman Ishan Kishan launched a powerful assault, scoring a quickfire 77 runs off 40 balls, which also marked the fastest innings by an Indian batsman against Pakistan in World Cup history. During his innings, which was adorned with several sixes and fours, he built an extremely crucial 87-run partnership with Tilak Varma. 

In the latter part of the innings, Suryakumar Yadav scored 32 runs off 28 balls and Shivam Dube scored 27 runs off 17 balls, boosting India's scoreboard to 175 runs for 7 wickets at the end of the stipulated 20 overs. Saim Ayub, who showed outstanding bowling performance for Pakistan, took 3 wickets for 25 runs.

Chasing a winning target of 176 runs, the Pakistan team found no opportunity to succeed against the disciplined bowling of the Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah quickly sent Saim Ayub and captain Salman Agha back to the pavilion, after which Hardik Pandya and the mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy completely dismantled Pakistan's middle order. With powerful batsmen including Babar Azam failing, their score suffered a severe collapse, reaching 34 runs for 4 wickets and 78 runs for 7 wickets. Varun Chakravarthy did not allow the lower-order batsmen to stay at the crease for long either, reducing them to 97 runs for 9 wickets, and at the end of 18 overs, Pakistan's innings was restricted to 114 runs.

With this excellent bowling performance, India's number of victories against Pakistan in T20 World Cup history further increased to 8-1. Due to India's dominance in all aspects of the game, they have secured the top position in Group 'A' and qualified for the 'Super 8' round, while the severe weaknesses in Pakistan's batting were clearly demonstrated in this match.
