Habaraduwa Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Mr. M.K. Kamal Gamini Thilaka, stated that the signboard warning that bathing in the sea near Kathaluwa estuary is dangerous is currently not at that location, and if that signboard had been there, a young life might not have been lost prematurely in this manner.

The Inquirer into Sudden Deaths revealed these facts during the inquest into the death of Achira Sanees Samarasekara, a young man residing in Garaduwa, Kamburugamuwa area, who drowned while enjoying himself with family relatives who had come to celebrate his twentieth birthday.

Mr. Asan Samarasekara, the sixty-four-year-old father of Achira Sanees, who had passed the G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination, stopped his Advanced Level studies midway, and was learning Korean, stated during the inquest that Achira Sanees was the youngest child in the family. On January 29th, a group of relatives, including parents and siblings, had come to the beach near Koggala estuary to celebrate the deceased's twentieth birthday. There, the deceased young man had been fishing with a rod and later enjoying himself by playing with a ball with the group.

While playing, the ball fell towards the estuary and was carried away into the sea. When Achira swam into the sea to retrieve it, he drowned and disappeared. At that moment, two other children who had come with them jumped into the sea to save him, and although they too were carried away by the water, local residents and relatives together managed to rescue those two children safely and bring them ashore. However, Achira Sanees could not be saved, and his body was later found at the exact spot where he had drowned during a subsequent search.

Mrs. Latika Namalee Samarasekara, the fifty-seven-year-old mother of the deceased, also gave evidence regarding this incident. Sergeant Bandula of Habaraduwa Police conducted the inquest proceedings, and Dr. Pabashara Gunasinghe, the Judicial Medical Officer at Karapitiya National Hospital, conducted the post-mortem examination. Considering the evidence presented and the medical reports, the Inquirer into Sudden Deaths concluded that this was a sudden death due to drowning and asphyxiation.
