Yesterday, 03 people including a foreigner died in Bulathsinhala, Pindeniya and Weligama due to accidents.

The Police Media Division reports that three lives have been lost due to fatal road accidents that occurred in several parts of the island yesterday, January 02. These accidents were reported within the three police divisions of Bulathsinhala, Pindeniya, and Weligama, and it is regrettable that one accident involved the death of a foreign national and another involved a 15-year-old minor.

These incidents once again underscore the importance of adhering to road rules to minimize road accidents.




The first accident was reported on January 02, 2026, during the daytime, near the Wahimaduwa Junction on the Horana - Mathugama main road, which falls under the Bulathsinhala Police Division. This accident occurred when a car traveling from Bulathsinhala towards Aegaloya collided head-on with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. The person riding the motorcycle sustained serious injuries in the collision and was immediately taken to Bulathsinhala Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries upon admission to the hospital. Preliminary police investigations revealed that the deceased was a 77-year-old resident of Kobowaka, Govinna area. The driver of the car involved in this accident has been arrested by the Bulathsinhala Police, and further investigations are underway.

Meanwhile, another tragic fatal road accident was reported in the Pindeniya Police Division on the evening of the same day. This accident occurred near the Annasigala road on the Kothiyakumbura - Aruggammana road, which belongs to the Pindeniya Police Division. The accident happened when a SLTB bus traveling from Bogala Mine towards Kothiyakumbura collided with a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction. Both the rider and the pillion rider of the motorcycle sustained serious injuries in this severe accident and were admitted to Karawanella Hospital. However, the 15-year-old minor, a resident of Waraththenna, Aruggammana area, who was riding the motorcycle, unfortunately succumbed to his injuries upon hospitalization. The driver of the SLTB bus involved in this incident has been arrested by the Pindeniya Police, and further investigations are being conducted by the Pindeniya Police.




Furthermore, a fatal road accident also occurred on the night of January 02, 2026, in the Weligama Police Division, a popular tourist attraction in the Southern Province. This accident happened on the Weligama coastal road within the Weligama Police Division when a jeep traveling from Matara towards Galle collided with a pedestrian crossing the road. The pedestrian, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, died upon admission to Walana Hospital. According to the police, the deceased was a 42-year-old Slovak national. The driver of the jeep involved in this fatal accident has been arrested by the Weligama Police, and further investigations into the incident are being conducted.
