According to the latest data reports from Sri Lanka's foreign exchange market, some fluctuations are observed today (January 15) in the exchange rates of the US dollar and other major foreign currencies, as well as in gold prices. The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) has announced both the buying and selling prices of the US dollar at approximately LKR 309.00, while slight variations in these rates exist among commercial banks.

While Sampath Bank recorded the buying price of a dollar at LKR 305.75 and the selling price at LKR 312.25, Seylan Bank offers a buying price of LKR 307.15 and a selling price of LKR 311.15. State and private sector banks such as People's Bank and Union Bank have maintained the dollar's selling price around the LKR 312.00 mark, while Nations Trust Bank (NTB) has reported a higher selling price of LKR 314.38 for the dollar.




Considering the average bank rates for other major currencies in the world, higher values have been reported for the Euro and British Pound. The average buying price for a Euro (EUR) is LKR 354.76 and the selling price is LKR 365.99, while a British Pound (GBP) is recorded at a buying price of LKR 408.65 and a selling price of LKR 421.77. Additionally, the Australian Dollar (AUD) sells for LKR 212.50, the Canadian Dollar (CAD) for LKR 227.10, and the Singapore Dollar (SGD) for LKR 245.20. The selling value of the neighboring Indian Rupee (INR) is LKR 3.65, and the Japanese Yen (JPY) selling value is LKR 2.01. The Swiss Franc (CHF) has a selling value of LKR 396.80 recorded in the market.

Analyzing prices in the local gold market, significant prices have been reported for 24-carat and 22-carat gold. The price of one gram of 24-carat gold is LKR 45,681, while one gram of 22-carat gold is recorded at LKR 41,879. According to the prices of an 8-gram gold sovereign, commonly referred to as a 'pawn' (pound/sovereign), a 24-carat 'pawn' is LKR 365,448 and a 22-carat 'pawn' is LKR 335,032. Data also indicates that international gold ounce prices are high, with a 24-carat ounce selling for LKR 1,426,599 and a 22-carat ounce for LKR 1,307,716. The price of one pound (1 lb) of gold, used for large-scale gold investments, has exceeded the two-crore rupee mark, with a 24-carat pound of gold recorded at LKR 20,726,000 and a 22-carat pound of gold at LKR 18,992,000.
