Motor Traffic Commissioner Kamal Amarasinghe states that the driver demerit points system will be implemented this year.
He also stated that the related technical work is currently underway. He further stated that a committee of experts from the Sri Lanka Police, the Ministry of Transport, the Department of Motor Traffic, and the Ministry of Digital Economy is currently preparing the relevant methodology.
Under the new system, with the launch of the GovPay online fine payment service, demerit points obtained for driver traffic offenses will be calculated. Each driver is given a maximum of 24 demerit points, and if all these points are lost, the driver's license will be suspended for two years.
