Two police officers on traffic duty in Ambalantota town were run over by a group of people who arrived in a car and fled, resulting in the death of one officer and injuries to two others, including another officer. The police state that this incident occurred today around 2:45 AM.
Although the police officers on duty signaled the suspicious car to stop, the driver disregarded the police command, drove forward, and hit the two officers, causing the accident. Information reports that after the accident, this white car fled towards Hambantota. It has been identified as a vehicle that was traveling from Tangalle towards Kataragama.
The officer who died in this unfortunate incident has been identified as Police Constable Sarath. He succumbed to his injuries after being admitted to the Hambantota District General Hospital with serious injuries. Another police constable and a civil security officer who were injured in the incident have been hospitalized. It is mentioned that the civil security officer has been admitted to the Ambalantota Divisional Hospital.
Further investigations into this incident are ongoing, and the police further stated that neither the car that caused the accident nor the suspects who were in it have been arrested yet.
