A suspicious luxury car, abandoned and locked near the 140 km post between Aparekka and Beliatta on the Southern Expressway, has been discovered by the Thihagoda Police. Following information received from the Road Development Authority, the vehicle was taken into police custody last night (25), and initial investigations have revealed a significant amount of information regarding a number plate fraud.

Police investigations have revealed that another vehicle with the exact same registration number as the car in question is owned by an individual in the Ratnapura area. Although the number plates are identical, the vehicle found on the expressway is maroon in color, while the vehicle in Ratnapura is white. Police have confirmed a clear discrepancy in the engine numbers of the two vehicles.

During a search conducted after opening the doors of the discovered car, a travel ticket was found, confirming that it had entered from the Dodangoda interchange and driven towards Mattala. Additionally, a certificate belonging to a well-known college in the Kurunegala area and a diary were found inside the vehicle. A photocopy of an identity card belonging to an individual from the Pothuhera area was also found in the diary.

Inquiries made through the Pothuhera Police regarding the address mentioned on the identity card revealed that the individual had left home yesterday morning. To definitively identify which of these two vehicles is legitimate and to understand the nature of this racket, the Thihagoda Police have now taken steps to refer the relevant vehicle to the Government Analyst.
