A recent report released by the American Flight Safety Foundation (FAS) has revealed that a severe technical fault, which existed in the Air India aircraft prior to the crash, may have been the cause of the tragic Air India plane crash that occurred on June 12, 2025, in Ahmedabad. The Boeing 787-8 aircraft, belonging to Air India, was scheduled to fly from Ahmedabad to London. It crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad within seconds of taking off, and this disaster claimed the lives of 270 people, including 60 foreigners.
Only one person was able to survive this horrific accident.According to the American Flight Safety Foundation, documents from business whistleblowers have confirmed that this aircraft, which has been used for flights since 2014, had technical and systemic problems from its inception. The report strongly emphasizes that a fire broke out in the aircraft while it was flying in 2022, which may have caused some damage to the aircraft's internal systems, and that information about such serious incidents had not been made public.
The FAS organization suspects that since most modern aircraft systems operate on electricity and software, an electrical failure may have caused the aircraft's systems to shut down one by one. However, the complete data, including the aircraft's technical condition and cockpit voice recordings, has not yet been made public, hindering the precise confirmation of the sequence in which the systems failed. The organization points out that this problem is not limited to India, stating that nearly 2000 complaints of malfunctions have been reported concerning other Boeing 787 aircraft operating in countries like America, Canada, and Australia.
Due to this accident and the closure of regional airspace, Air India is estimated to incur a record loss of over 15,000 crore Indian rupees in this financial year. Pakistan's closure of its airspace for Indian aircraft has also led to an increase in the cost of European and American flights. Meanwhile, the Indian Supreme Court, considering a petition filed by the 91-year-old father of the deceased pilot Sumit Sabarwal, stated that the pilot cannot be blamed for the tragedy that occurred on June 12, and that no one in the country considers it the pilot's fault.
