A woman dressed in an attire resembling a police inspector's sports uniform, carrying a firearm, and suspiciously loitering near a lodge in the Pettah area, has been arrested by the police. After being produced before the court, the woman was ordered to be remanded until the 23rd of next month.
This raid was carried out yesterday (16) based on information received by officers of the Colombo Central Division Criminal Investigation Unit. At the time of the arrest, she was impersonating a police inspector, with a pistol tucked into her waist. Subsequent investigations confirmed that she was not a police officer and that the firearm in her possession was a fake one made of wood.
When questioned by police officers to confirm her identity, she claimed that her national identity card and driving license were missing and presented a receipt for a complaint filed with the Peradeniya Police regarding the matter. However, during further checks conducted by the officers, her national identity card was found in her possession.
During extensive questioning of the suspect, it was revealed that she had obtained money from various individuals by promising foreign employment and had given it to a foreign employment agency in the Kurunegala area. It was further revealed that she had come to Colombo and was hiding, engaging in textile trading, to evade threats from those individuals whom she was unable to send abroad.
However, based on the suspicion that she might have been planning to commit a crime using a fake police uniform and a fake firearm, the police arrested her and took steps to produce her before the court.
