Mirihana Headquarters Police state that an organized gang of women, using a four-month-old baby to feign fainting on a bus in the Kotte area of Colombo, robbed a gold chain from the neck of a child care worker and fled in a three-wheeler. The police further state that the stolen gold chain weighs one sovereign and is valued at nearly three hundred thousand rupees.
The child care worker who faced this incident works at a child care center located at Bangala Junction, Kotte. She had gone out for a child's need at the center and was returning to the center when she boarded a bus in Pitakotte. According to the police, while she was seated in the back seat of the bus, three women belonging to the same family, along with a four-month-old baby, boarded the bus. Two of them sat on either side of her.
As the bus approached the bus stop near Bangala Junction and she was preparing to get off, the two women seated on either side of her also stood up from their seats. One of the women, while preparing to alight from the bus's footboard in front of her, feigned fainting. At that very moment, the woman behind the complainant, carrying the baby, loudly shouted "Oh, I'm fainting, I'm fainting," diverting the worker's attention. The police further report that instantly, she pressed the baby against the worker's shoulder, snatched the gold chain from her neck, and fled with the baby in a three-wheeler that had followed the bus.
A senior police officer confirmed that the women's gang hastily getting off the bus and fleeing in a three-wheeler that followed was recorded by a CCTV camera installed in the relevant area. Mirihana Headquarters Police have currently launched extensive investigations into the incident.
