Update: Hiran Kosala, who was murdered in Ambalangoda, had underworld connections.

 The manager of the Singer showroom located in the center of Ambalangoda town was shot dead inside his business premises this morning. The person who was thus killed is Hiran Kosala, and he was also a mayoral candidate for the Ambalangoda Municipal Council from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

Initial information reveals that two individuals who arrived shot him while he was sitting in a chair inside his business premises. It is also reported that he was closely involved in political activities with Mr. Gayantha Karunathilaka, a powerful politician in the area.

Hiran Kosala, who was murdered, had faced various allegations previously and was also an inmate. Specifically, he had been accused of secretly facilitating treatment for a person injured in an underworld shooting that occurred about two years ago.

It is said that even the doctor involved in the incident has now fled the country. Although Hiran Kosala was not directly a member of an underworld gang, the police suspect that he had friendly relations with underworld operatives in the area, and these close ties may have been the cause of this murder.

He had a close friendship with Biranth Warusawithana, the brother-in-law of Karandeniya Sudda and S.T.F. Raju, who was murdered in front of the Ambalangoda Municipal Council in early November 2025. Due to these friendships with Biranth and Karandeniya Sudda's faction, there is suspicion as to whether this attack was carried out by the opposing underworld gang, Shantha's faction, or another rival group operating in the Ambalangoda and Ahungalla areas.

Recently, conflicts between rival gangs have escalated, exemplified by the attack targeting Uragaha Shantha's relatives on the 18th and the retaliatory shootings that occurred in the Trincomalee area. This murder is also suspected to be an extension of the ongoing series of tit-for-tat conflicts between these underworld gangs, and the identity of the party that carried out the shooting has not yet been confirmed.
