Homagama Headquarters Police reported that four individuals connected to the abduction of an 18-year-old youth from the Makumbura area on Tuesday (23) evening have been arrested.
The youth, a resident of Koslanda, Diyatalawa, had arrived in Colombo the day before yesterday (23) for a job interview at a private institution. For this purpose, he had reached the Kottawa Makumbura Multimodal Transport Centre via the expressway on the night of the 22nd.
Subsequently, the youth boarded a three-wheeler to go to a friend's house in Nugegoda from Makumbura. During the journey, a person claiming to be a friend of the three-wheeler driver joined the vehicle, and after traveling a short distance further, two more individuals claiming to be friends also boarded the vehicle. The police state that this group then proceeded to abduct the 18-year-old youth.
While being abducted in this manner, the youth saw a police roadblock and shouted loudly. Although the police officers who responded immediately acted to rescue the youth, the individuals involved in the abduction fled at that moment.
After being handed over to the Homagama Headquarters Police for further investigation into the incident, investigations were launched under the direction of Inspector Lalith, the OIC of its Criminal Investigation Division, and all suspects were arrested within a day.
The arrested suspects are four individuals aged between 46 and 50, residents of Chandrika Kumaratunga Mawatha, Malabe, and Polhengoda, Kirulapana. The police further state that they are heavily addicted to drug use.
A senior police officer involved in the incident stated that information has been revealed that these suspects have been involved in abducting individuals and extorting money for a long time.
The arrested suspects were scheduled to be produced before the Homagama Magistrate's Court the day before yesterday (24).
