SJB Demands Select Committee to Uncover Truth Behind Disasters

Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Member of Parliament, Mr. Harshana Rajakaruna, proposes the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee, with powers vested in the opposition, to investigate the government's failure to intervene and minimize the disasters caused by adverse weather conditions.

The MP emphasized that the opposition's objective is not to conceal the truth but to uncover the facts.

“Despite having the opportunity to minimize the potential devastation caused by the prevailing adverse weather conditions, it was missed. The government failed to show proper preparedness for it. International media, international organizations, as well as local meteorological agencies, issued warnings to the government. However, because these warnings were not heeded and acted upon, thousands of lives were lost, and property worth billions was destroyed. Therefore, we propose the appointment of a Parliamentary Select Committee with a majority of members, structured in a way that gives power to the opposition. Our objective here is not to conceal the truth, but to investigate how this error occurred and to ensure that such mistakes do not happen again in the future,” the MP further stated.

The MP expressed these views yesterday (15) at a Samagi Jana Balawegaya press conference held in Colombo.
